South Charleston is a city located in Kanawha County, in the south-west region of the state. Its name is based on the city being located primarily on the south side of the Kanawha River, although it is actually northwest, not south, of the city of Charleston. The city has a total area of 8.51 square miles, and a population of approx 13,450 people.

| South Charleston Fire Department - Stations & Apparatus
|
The South Charleston Fire Department - has 40 full-time career firefighters on duty at all times, providing 24 hour coverage every day of the year. Every full-time firefighter is an Emergency Medical Technician, certified in hazardous response, and trained in all disciplines of Technical Rescue. The fire department not only responds to fires, but many other types of emergencies as well. This includes auto accident extrication, confined space rescue, water rescue, trench rescues, high angle rescue, structural collapse, and hazardous material situations.
The department responds along with the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority as medical rapid responders, and all engine companies are equipped with cardiac defibrillators.
